Samsung introduces two new foldable smartphones

The Galaxy Z Fold3 and Z Flip3. These are the latest models in Samsung’s range of foldable smartphones. One folds in width, the other in length, and both feature fast 5G connectivity.

To start with the Fold3: when opened, it has a 7.6-inch Infinity Flex screen with a so-called under-display camera. According to Samsung, the image on the new device is 29 percent brighter, while less energy is used. Both the main and cover screens (from 6.2 inches) offer a refresh rate of 120Hz.

Met S Pen

The device includes a triple camera system, consisting of a 12MP ultra-wide camera, a 12MP wide-angle lens and a zoom lens of the same resolution. The battery capacity is 4,400mAh.

For the first time, an S Pen belongs to a foldable phone from the South Korean manufacturer. For example, you can easily make notes on the main screen during a video call or check off your checklist while going through emails. The Fold3 is available in Phantom Black, Phantom Green and Phantom Silver. Target price: from 1,799 euros for the version with 12GB RAM and 256GB storage space.

Reverse form factor

The Galaxy Z Flip3 has exactly the opposite form factor: you fold this device in half in the vertical direction. The main screen with this device has a diagonal of 6.7-inch and on the front is a smaller Super AMOLED display of 1.9-inch. On it, things like the time and important notifications are visible at all times, even when the phone is closed.

The Flip3 comes with two cameras (ultra-wide angle and wide-angle of 12 megapixels), a battery of 3,300mAh and – with 8MB RAM – slightly less RAM than the Galaxy Z Fold3. That ultimately translates into a price tag that, at 1,049 euros (from admittedly), is somewhat easier to digest than the almost 1,800 euros that you have to pay for the other folding model. In terms of colors, you can choose from Cream, Green, Lavender and Phantom Black with the Flip3.

200,000 folds

Things often went wrong with the first foldables, but the technology has become a lot more mature in the meantime. For example, tests by Bureau Veritas show that you can easily open and close the two new Samsung devices 200,000 times. They are now also equipped with a water resistance rating of IPX8 for the first time, while the Corning Gorilla Glass Victus is supposed to provide the necessary scratch and drop resistance.
