Review Philips Sonicare Prestige 9900 (HX9992/12)

Over the past two months I have extensively tested the Philips Sonicare Prestige 9900 and brushed my teeth with it. How do you like this smart electric toothbrush? You can read my findings in my Philips Sonicare Prestige 9900 review.

Philips Sonicare Prestige 9900

At the time of writing, the Philips Sonicare Prestige 9900 is the best, most comprehensive toothbrush from Philips, including app, brushing programs and much more.

While this may sound a bit overwhelming for a toothbrush, there are a number of features that I have come to really appreciate during my two months of heavy use. More on that later in the review.

The Philips Sonicare Prestige 9900 comes with a luxury travel case, charger and of course the toothbrush itself, including one brush head. That is exactly the composition I tested!

If you don’t want to read the whole review, I’ll start with a summary.

Philips Sonicare Prestige 9900

The Philips Sonicare Prestige 9900 is a particularly stylish and pleasant toothbrush with many options. The adaptive intensity (SenseIQ) provides a better brushing experience. The only improvement I would like is an app that would be a bit more consistent in connection, for easier data syncing. If you are looking for a particularly good toothbrush, then this Prestige 9900 is definitely recommended!

Philips Sonicare Prestige 9900: the looks and possibilities

Now a few years ago I never thought I would have anything to say about the appearance of a toothbrush, but the Philips Sonicare Prestige 9900 simply looks good. Stylish, premium and well finished.

Especially the dark version that I tested has a premium look, luxurious and chic. Now this may not be the most important thing when brushing your teeth, but every time you see this electric toothbrush, it is confirmed.

Now that we’ve got this out of the way, the Prestige 9900 comes very complete. You receive

  • Toothbrush (body)
  • Brush head (1x)
  • Charger + attachment
  • Luxury travel bag
  • USB plug + USB-C cable, both for travel case

The travel case, which feels genuinely luxurious, works very nicely. The big advantage of this is that the toothbrush can be charged with a USB-C cable. Handy: I usually have it with me when I’m on the road or on vacation. This way you can charge your toothbrush at any location.

One of the selling points of the Prestige 9900 is the included app and SenseIQ. In addition to brushing ‘normal’ teeth, I have of course also tested it extensively. Below my daily experience for the past ~2 months with this smart toothbrush.

Daily use and app

Ok, how good (or bad) can brushing actually go and how much influence does a toothbrush have on this? I now know that a good toothbrush can really make a difference. The Philips Sonicare Prestige 9900 is a particularly pleasant toothbrush for daily use.

For daily maintenance you can set a number of positions via the app. You can choose the intensity (low, medium or high) and there are a number of different brushing modes. Depending on this mode, the duration of the brushing is also adjusted.

In the first period I experimented with different settings, in which I found a high brushing intensity most pleasant. After the initial setting, I did not adjust it anymore, but I did turn on SenseIQ.

This so-called adaptive intensity becomes up to 100?! checked times per second whether too much or too little pressure is being exerted on teeth + gums. This then ensures that the intensity is automatically adjusted. In this way, SenseIQ ensures that you have an optimal brushing experience.

Furthermore, the app actually does exactly what it should do: a number of basic settings, but also show how your brushing round went. If there are certain areas of interest in the mouth that you miss or pay too little attention to, the Philips Sonicare Prestige 9900 app can show this.

I used this so-called guided brushing regularly in the beginning, but you also notice that after a while you no longer always take your phone with you to open this mode. Nevertheless, it is a handy function to gaps in your brushing behavior.

The app is relatively simple and I’m actually quite happy with that. However, there is also one thing about the app that I don’t like. That is the fact that the connection is lost quite quickly and connection cannot be established in the background. The app must therefore be active (and open) to sync any data and adjust settings.

I can understand the reason for this very well: this saves, among other things, in battery life. Still, it would have been nice if the connection had been a little more consistent, or at least if there were settings to adjust this.

Where no improvement is needed is the battery life: it can simply be called good. With twice a day brushing, I regularly got 1.5/2 weeks on one battery charge. An excellent performance.
