Review OnePlus Buds Pro: buy or pass up?

With the OnePlus Buds Pro, new wireless earbuds are coming onto the market, which compete with the established order. With interesting functions and possibilities on paper, I was very curious how these would perform. I have tested them extensively in recent weeks and you can read the result in this OnePlus Buds Pro review.

The conclusion of this OnePlus Buds Pro review? They are very pleasant earplugs, with a deep bass and a full sound. The noise cancellation is of a high level and beats a large part of the competitors. Although the app is somewhat limited, the OnePlus Buds Pro are definitely recommended to buy.

OnePlus Buds Pro

OnePlus, the brand that turned the smartphone market upside down years ago, wants to do this again in the earbud market. The OnePlus Buds Pro have all the papers for that, including noise cancellation, good battery life and interesting design.

Over the past few weeks I was allowed to test the OnePlus Buds Pro and I was able to use them in different situations. For music, speech and communication. I now have a good idea of all facets of these wireless earbuds with noise canceling, and you can read that in my OnePlus Buds Pro review.

If you’re looking for overly good noise canceling, then this is the right choice

With the OnePlus Buds Pro, the company has delivered a top product. A nice, full sound with present low tones, very good noise canceling and a pleasant fit. The app may be a bit more extensive, for example with an equalizer, but all in all I am very satisfied with the OnePlus Buds Pro.

OnePlus Buds Pro Looks and fit

When you see the OnePlus Buds Pro, there may be other earbuds you should think about… Apple indeed. In any case, the design has some inspiration from that, even though they have made a nice addition with the color elements.

Apart from the fact that there are similarities, I can actually appreciate this design. They are not too big, do not protrude too far from your ears and above all, they are very comfortable. I have used the Airpods Pro from Apple for a while and I could really appreciate the fit. The OnePlus Buds Pro definitely match this.

The box of the OnePlus Buds Pro is glossy white and slides fine in my pocket. I always keep my wireless earbuds in that little pocket of jeans and they fit well there too.

Two different colors are available: white (with silver stems) and black. As you can see in the picture I received the white one and although I like black, the white works very well too.

In terms of looks, there is little to fault with the OnePlus Buds Pro, but the looks are of course not everything. How do they perform in daily use? How does the Active Noise Canceling (ANC) work? How is the sound quality? All questions that I will answer later in the review.

Daily use and noise canceling

First of all, after unpacking the earbuds and trying on the eartips (three are included: S, M and L) I connected to my smartphone. This, as with most earplugs, was easy.

I then installed the app, which initially took some searching, but that is the HeyMelody app (Android on iOS) which OnePlus shares with parent company Oppo. In this app you can, among other things, do a fit test to check whether you have used the right eartips. Personally, I went for the smallest, which turned out to be the right choice because I passed the test.

After the initial setup and connection, the OnePlus Buds Pro connected quickly every time and started playing music, podcast, books or the conversation quickly. You can read how this all sounds later in the review.

First I want to talk about noise canceling, the Active Noise Canceling (ANC) to be precise. This actively filters out ambient noise by producing a counter-noise. And that’s exactly what these earbuds do, with the option to choose a specific mode for this.

It is possible to choose:

  • Noise Reduction – Default Setting
  • Smart Noise Canceling – Noise canceling adapts to the environment
  • Maximum Noise Reduction – Filters out everything and everyone

Most of the time I used the smart noise cancellation, which was spot on in most cases. There were a number of moments when the noise reduction could have been a little more powerful and I switched to ‘maximum’. Still, I dare say that the ANC was perfect about 95% of the time.

Where I previously compared it with the Airpods Pro in terms of design, in terms of ANC, the OnePlus Buds Pro absolutely exceed Apple’s earplugs. The noise canceling is simply much better. In most situations, a large part of the ambient noise is filtered out, many credits to OnePlus for that.

The app, HeyMelody, is fairly limited. For example, there is no equalizer present. However, there are options to adjust a number of settings, such as the operation. Another interesting feature is the ability to do a hearing test.

This allows the app to determine the ideal sound for your hearing based on beeps. You can then set this sound as the default to improve the listening experience. The difference was not very big, but big enough to be audible.

In the app we also see the ‘Zen mode’, which makes it possible to listen to soothing sounds through the earplugs. These sounds can – if desired – be sent to the earbuds so that you can activate Zen mode via the controls on the stems.

All in all, I am very satisfied with the daily use of the OnePlus Buds Pro. The app may be a little more extensive, at least with an equalizer.

Sound and battery

I have used the OnePlus Buds Pro in different settings in recent weeks, as well as for music, speech and calling. In fact, these wireless earbuds do very well in all these areas.

In terms of music, the low tones are very present, making it sound very similar to JBL. I can appreciate the bass that is present, so the OnePlus Buds Pro simply perform well here. The music therefore sounds nice and full and due to the emphasis on the low tones, there are moments when the middle and high tones are pushed a little further into the background.

The microphones on the OnePlus Buds Pro also work sufficiently: I made several calls with them and the sound quality was experienced as very good on the other hand. With the OnePlus Buds Pro you have all-in-one earplugs, due to the good sound quality, ANC and strong microphones.

The battery of the OnePlus Buds Pro is very good, in theory you get the following with it:

  • Earbuds with ANC: 5 hours + 23 hours in charging case
  • Earbuds without ANC: 7 hours + 31 hours in charging case

In addition, the charging case can be charged wirelessly (Qi) and fast charging has also been added. With this warpcharge you can charge the earbuds within 10 minutes for 10 hours of use (including charging case).

But how is this in practice? That is relatively difficult to test, but there has never been a moment that they were empty or that I had to unexpectedly recharge them. I can’t say whether you really get the 5 hours with noise canceling. However, it comes close. Personal use in the earbuds for 5 hours in a row, without putting them in the charging case in between.

The conclusion for the battery life is that it is more than sufficient for ‘normal’ use, which you can extend by turning off ANC.
