OnePlus Nord 2 review: top middle class does a lot of good

OnePlus can now call itself an established brand in the smartphone market. With the new middle class: the OnePlus Nord 2, they compete in this segment. You can read whether they succeed in this in the OnePlus Nord 2 review.

OnePlus Nord 2

From OnePlus Nord 2 is ‘positioned exactly in the middle’. That is, below the OnePlus 9, but, for example, above the OnePlus Nord CE and is therefore an interesting candidate in this segment.

In recent years I have looked at many top models from OnePlus, so I am especially curious whether you still need a top model. In this review of the OnePlus Nord 2 I will find out and tell you everything you need to know about this device. Before I go deeper into this smartphone, first of all a summary.

OnePlus Nord 2: a middle class with top ambitions

The OnePlus Nord 2 is an interesting smartphone in the middle segment. A lot is going well: the fast charging, the battery life, but also the cameras, software and speed are perfectly fine. The device is not waterproof, but for this price that is an acceptable concession in my opinion. Whether you should buy the OnePlus Nord 2? Yes, it is definitely a good smartphone, without paying the top price.

Pros

Camera

Charges (very) quickly

Great software (close to standard Android)

Good battery life

Fast and fluid

Design & scherm

The design of the OnePlus Nord 2 is no surprise: it looks a lot like its smaller and bigger brother, but I have few problems with this. The device has a premium finish and the glass back certainly contributes to this.

The back of the device is not very exciting and is populated by the camera and the OnePlus logo. The blue color does not come across completely in the photo, it is relatively ‘bright’. However, I have come to appreciate it more and more during the review period.

The screen of the Nord 2 has a refresh rate of 90Hz, not a flagship specification, but you can work with it just fine. You notice the difference in refresh rate especially if you use the devices side by side (with, for example, 120Hz and 90Hz).

An interesting detail is that you can adjust the refresh rate of the screen. Where standard 90Hz is used, it can also be reset to 60Hz. However, the screen seems a little less bright and therefore less easy to read in the bright sun.

The AMOLED screen has a size of 6.43 inches and a resolution of 2400 x 1080 pixels (that’s 410ppi). With this, OnePlus offers an excellent screen for this segment: I am satisfied.

Performance and software

Where OnePlus invariably uses Qualcomm chipsets in the top models, the Nord 2 has opted for a MediaTek chipset. This is – according to OnePlus – faster than the equivalent of Qualcomm.

The Nord 2 runs on the new MediaTek Dimensity 1200 chipset and is available in combination with 8/12GB and 128/256GB, depending on the model chosen.

Unfortunately, I can’t judge the differences with its predecessor because I simply haven’t tested it. I can confirm that the Nord 2 can handle daily tasks well. Whether it’s social, mail or games: I didn’t notice any hiccups during testing.

A big advantage of the OnePlus Nord 2 is the fact that there is support for 5G. You can also use the fast(er) mobile network in the Netherlands.

Under the screen, OnePlus has placed the fingerprint scanner that does its job absolutely properly. Recognition is fast and the time that the screen has to be touched to unlock is also relatively short.

What I’m still very excited about is the software. The OnePlus Nord 2 runs on Oxygen OS (Android 11), a slightly modified version of standard Android. Nevertheless, a number of useful extra functions have been added to make the total picture more complete.

A number of standard apps from OnePlus are also included. For example, a gallery, file manager and a weather app. If desired, these apps can also be removed.

All in all I am very pleased with the software, although there are a number of minor translation errors. Nevermind: Oxygen OS makes me appreciate the OnePlus Nord 2 even more.

Battery and camera

The battery used in the device has a capacity of 4,500 mAh. A major upgrade over its predecessor. It therefore took no effort at all to get through the whole day with one battery charge, even with more intensive use.

In the unlikely event that the battery does run out, you can fully charge the device within half an hour with the supplied charger. Indeed, half an hour and it is full again! Bizarrely fast, especially for a midranger.

Also a pleasant choice from OnePlus to supply the right charger for this, so that you can charge quickly out-of-the-box.

A lot has changed when it comes to the camera: it has gone back from 6!? cameras to 4 copies. At the back we find three, including the main camera of 50 megapixels. This is, among other things, equipped with optical image stabilization.

The OnePlus Nord 2 takes beautiful photos, on which the colors are displayed close to reality. This is especially true if the lighting conditions are right. If you also want to take pictures in more challenging conditions, the Nord 2 has a bit more trouble, although the night mode does make up for it.

The device also has an 8 megapixel wide-angle lens and a monochrome 2 megapixel camera, which is used, among other things, as support for the main camera.

Buy OnePlus Nord 2

The OnePlus Nord 2 has a suggested retail price of €399 for the 8GB/128GB model. The model with a 12GB/256GB is over the counter for € 499.
