The two largest lakes in the canton Zürich – Lake Zurich and Greifensee – not only invite you to jump into the refreshing water on beautiful summer days, but are also two worthwhile destinations for mini-breaks. Especially in this weather-permeated summer, a spontaneously appearing fine-weather window could be really celebrated on the two Zurich lakes. Where and how? I show that in this post.
Detour to the ship landing stage of Maur
The home port of Shipping Cooperative Greifensee in the tranquil Maur is not only the starting point for the popular ferry connection to Uster as well as the round trips and themed trips over the Greifensee, but – as we found out on a trip on a Sunday afternoon, also an attractive destination for everyone who wants to linger comfortably by the lake . The shipping cooperative has equipped an area with comfortable lounge furniture at the ship landing stage. And even if your feet stay dry here even when the sea level is high (luckily!), You don’t have to sit on dry land. In take-away & kiosk “Seebrise»Right next to it you can get cool drinks and fine snacks.
By the way, when the weather is a bit mixed, you can combine a detour to the «Seebrise» with a visit to the Mühle local museum. Until the end of October there is a special exhibition dedicated to the sensational Bastsandalen-Fund from the time of the pile dwellers.
Sail across the Greifensee with the city of Uster
From mid-April to mid-October, the largely unspoilt natural shore of the Greifensee can be admired from on board the MS Stadt Uster (or, depending on the course, also from the MS David Herrliberger). From Wednesday to Sunday the two ships are on a circular route on the Greifensee and – depending on the course – dock in Fällanden, Greifensee, Uster, Mönchaltorf and Maur. What I really like about the Greifensee is the view of the «green». The Greifensee has large parts of a protected and not built-up bank – for me an enormous quality. In particular because of its proximity to Zurich. I can get on the bus in the middle of the city and here, less than 15 minutes later, I am in a completely different world.
Of course, you don’t just get something to quench your thirst and hunger in the «sea breeze», but also get food on board the scheduled boats. The wine offer includes some local wines, which of course I had to try. The Greifensee shipping cooperative also has regular services culinary rides and adventure rides on offer.
Discover the Zurich lake basin with an audio guide
The change from Greifensee to Lake Zurich couldn’t be more contrasting. There is peace, space and the shimmering shoreline in all shades of green. Here the hustle and bustle, the joie de vivre and the hustle and bustle that extends to the lake on beautiful summer days. Will the scheduled ship navigate safely to the landing stage through the multitude of pedalos, sailors and stand-up paddlers? Sure you do! There is a lot going on on Lake Zurich in summer, and that also applies to the wide range of circular courses and themed trips offered by the Lake Zurich shipping company.
If you don’t have a lot of time with you, but still want to tousle your hair in the wind on the sundeck and at the same time experience the Zurich skyline from a different perspective from the ship, the 55-minute mini lake tour in the Zurich lake basin is ideal. This travels the route Bürkliplatz – Wollishofen – Zollikon – Tiefenbrunnen – Zürichhorn every hour between 9.45 a.m. and 4.45 p.m.
The free, matching one is also cool here Audio-Guide App, which provides exciting background information on the sights along the route. Well worth a listen – also for people who know the place in Zurich.
Short Lake Cruise – the classic after work
The mini lake tour is suitable for anyone who either wants to be a tourist in their own city for an hour or simply wants to spend a nice, refreshing hour in the Zurich lake basin. What is missing on the mini lake tour this year is a gastronomic offer. The audio guide app can of course not only be played on the mini lake tour, but also on the route of the one-and-a-half-hour small lake tour from Bürkliplatz to Erlenbach / Thalwil and back. A veritable after-work classic, also because the menu includes popular dishes at fair prices. I went to one of the evening courses several times this summer and every time I was amazed how mixed the audience is. From teenagers in love to girls after work meetings to pensioners dinner dates, we met everything on our trips on board the MS Uetliberg and MS Pfannenstiel.
Spontaneous sunset enjoyment on Lake Zurich
The great thing about the Little Lake Tour is that there are evening courses every day until autumn. The last course starts at 7:00 p.m. from Bürkliplatz into «See». This enables you to experience the most wonderful evening moods on the lake spontaneously and inexpensively after work. Pure holiday feeling for me! Why not take the time for 1.5 hours to slow down on Lake Zurich after a stressful day at the office?
