The Japanese manufacturer is preparing to launch on the Chinese market e: NP1 and e: NS1, two compact electric SUVs that could anticipate a similar model arriving in Europe in 2022.
The transition to the electric car has redefined the dynamics of the automotive market: if in the past it was Western countries that dictated the line, today to understand trends and new models we need to look to China. For two reasons: because with over 24 million registrations it represents the largest market, and because Beijing has played ahead by focusing everything on electric mobility. It is therefore logical that manufacturers launch new battery-powered models giving priority to the Land of the Dragon, to decide in the second place to which other markets to expand the proposal. Unsurprisingly, Honda has announced ten new electric offerings, to be marketed in China over the next five years. Among these, there are two that arouse the interest of those who, in Europe, try to anticipate the upcoming news. They are called e: NP1 and e: NS1 and could form the basis of a new model arriving in Europe in 2022, a compact electric SUV that would fit perfectly for the European market.
TWO BODIES, SAME PLATFORM
What makes these two models think the head for the European market? The Honda e: NP1 and e: NS1 are mechanically identical, both based on Honda’s new e: N Architecture F chassis, a platform designed for compact front-wheel drive electric vehicles. The design, then, is strongly inspired by the e: Concept with many elements in common: the pronounced nose, the thin headlights, the full-width rear light bar. Stylistic elements that are also found in the new HR-V, arriving in Italy in February 2022. The difference is only in the design, with the e: NS1 playing the role of sporty variant. Both will go on sale in China in the spring of 2022, but the brand plans to export Chinese-made electric vehicles globally. Here then the reasoning finds a square: this could be the model that should challenge competitors of the caliber of Hyundai Kona Electric and Peugeot e-2008.
THE TECHNICAL FEATURES
So far Honda hasn’t released many technical details related to the e: NP1 and e: NS1. The information communicated to the Chinese authorities to obtain the approval speaks of a maximum range of 500 km (311 miles), since it implies a battery with a considerable capacity placed under the floor of the car, 68.8 kWh to what is known . Manufacturers must communicate the specifications to the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Technology to obtain authorization to put the new models on sale, but it must be said that any model destined for the European market could have different characteristics. The two models will be powered by a 180 Hp or 201 Hp electric motor, the top speed will be limited to 150 km / h regardless of the engine. The electric SUV will have a new driver assistance system, which according to the Japanese manufacturer will offer better obstacle recognition capabilities, will be capable of improved prediction and more advanced decision-making compared to what is currently available. Putting all the elements in line, we can expect from Honda a new compact electric SUV that will be placed between the Jazz Crosstar and the new HR-V, stylistically very close to the latter and with one of the most advanced technology at the service of safety. of the market. Appointment to 2022.
