Brugge lose to Manchester City, say (almost) goodbye to round of 16

The goals were scored by Foden (15th), Stones against his side (17th), Mahrez (54th), Sterling (72nd) and Jesus (90th + 2). For honor, but also and above all to stay in the race for qualification, Club Brugge was keen to perform well at the Etihad Stadium after having suffered a correction (1-5) against the Citizens at home, the October 19.

Unaccustomed to such pressure in the league, the Bruges residents had to endure the pace of the Skyblues at the start of the game. At the quarter of an hour, Grealish launched brilliantly Cancelo in the depth following an interception of the Portuguese, whose rolled lob found the right post of Mignolet (15th). Brugge did not manage to emerge cleanly and, at the end of a choppy phase of play, a low center from Cancelo found Foden in the small rectangle to push the ball into the back of the empty net (1-0, 15th) .

Not dejected so far, the Club responded immediately. After a spectacular save by Ederson on a half volley from Vanaken, De Ketelare attempted a powerful cross which was deflected by Silva and bounced off Stones’ header to finish in goal, leaving the stadium speechless (1-1, 17th ). The following half hour, still dominated by City, nevertheless saw some flashes of the Bruges residents who proudly played their luck, as evidenced by the powerful strike from De Ketelaere on which Ederson (32nd) was lying. The Belgian champions were doing the big back and the shipments of Rodri (34th) or Foden (35th) stumbled on the Bruges defenders.

The second half opened with a clear opportunity for Riyad Mahrez who lost his duel against Mignolet (47th), followed by a new strike from Cancelo (50th) and a threatening header from Stones (51st). De Ketelaere missed his finish against Ederson after being found by Mata (54th). Manchester City seized the opportunity to knock out Bruges on the consecutive counter: little disturbed by the Bruges defense, Cancelo dropped the ball on the head of Mahrez, left alone in the small rectangle (2-1, 54th).

Vanaken and De Ketelaere combined to afford another strike in the rectangle (71st), but City again punished Bruges in the wake when Foden and Gündogan found themselves to finally isolate Sterling, who had no difficulty in concluding the action. (3-1, 72nd). A few minutes later, Kevin De Bruyne, fresh from the game, tried his luck closely (77th) but his sending flew into the stands. The Club was somewhat disorganized, giving Mignolet the opportunity to make two world-class saves, ahead of Palmer (85th) then Gabriel Jesus (87th) before losing to the same Jesus at the very end of the game (4-1 , 90th + 2).

In the group A standings, Bruges (4 points) keeps 3 points ahead of Leipzig who snatched the split in stoppage time against PSG, 2-2. The people of Bruges therefore have the advantage in the race for third qualifying place for the Europa League before the clash against the Germans on 24 November. Manchester City takes the lead with 9 points, one more than Paris.
