On Sunday (November 7th, 2021) the team of the hour in the 2nd Bundesliga comes to the Schalker Arena: Darmstadt 98 is currently riding a wave of success. With ten points from four games in October, the Hessians are the most successful second division team in this period. Probably not the best time for the team of coach Dimitrios Grammozis, which just had to deal with two unpleasant setbacks.
Meager playful achievements
The cup-out against third division 1860 Munich and the defeat at 1.FC Heidenheim (both 0: 1) have raised doubts – not least of Grammozis. Especially the cup bankruptcy, in which the Schalke coach spared some regular players and was mainly responsible for the defeat, brought the 43-year-old criticism. But also the meager playful performances – Schalke did not develop a scoring chance against Heidenheim – are not only eyed with suspicion by the supporters for a long time.
“You can’t believe you’re just marching through the league“Grammozis said on Friday.”We have to look ahead. It doesn’t help us to cry around for a long time.”
Is Simon Terodde holding back the goal record?
“You can be critical without questioning the big picture. We have to remain critical, but keep calm.”says Rouven Schröder. Schalke’s sports director wants to avoid a coaching discussion and prefer to focus on the shared responsibility of team and coach. So it is extremely unfavorable that the previous guarantor of success Simon Terodde is no longer able to meet.
He has already managed eleven goals and two assists this season, while at the same time he set Dieter Schatzschneider’s long-standing second division record of 153 goals. But since then he has not scored in four competitive games. The 33-year-old seems to be holding back the chance of securing the sole record.
“Of course it would be nice if this discussion about the record goal was over“, says Grammozis. Once the next goal has been scored and the new record awarded, so the hope is that everything will go much easier and more carefree for the attacker. Because Schalke’s dependence on Terodde is striking.
Grammozis’ contract expires
Schalke are currently third in the second division table and have their promotion goal in sight after more than a third of the season. But of course Schröder did not miss the deficits in the Schalke game. And neither are the doubts that arise. At the end of the season, the Grammozis contract expires. The financially extremely tight Schalke can hardly afford a premature separation anyway.
Whether it will continue with Grammozis beyond this point in time will probably be clarified by the end of the second half of the season. In any case, a win against Darmstadt would give the coach new arguments for continued employment. “We don’t talk about the coach. We talk together”says Schröder.
